The news comes from Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick who said in her weekly newsletter the incident took place when a part-time Animal Control officer mistook a lost dog for a wild coyote.

"This was devastating for the family who lost their dog and for our community," she wrote. "Many residents have written and called me to express their sadness and concern about how this tragic mistake happened while also asking what the town is doing to prevent this in the future."

Kupchick said she met with the Police Department and together they have come up with a plan to update the town's policies regarding wildlife calls.

Until a new set can be developed for dealing with wildlife, Kupchick said she has asked Police Chief Christopher Lyddy to ensure that a senior police officer responds to all calls regarding wildlife when an animal control officer is dispatched to a call.

The Police Department has also scheduled additional training for all animal control officers.

"I reached out to the family and shared my sincere and heartfelt apologies as did our Police Department," Kupchick said in the newsletter. "I vowed to the family who lost their dog that I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again."
